Windhoek has an interesting mix of historical architecture and modern buildings, many of which are worth a look at, including the Alte Feste, an old fort, the 1896 Christuskirche Christ Church, and the more contemporary Supreme Court.

Day 5Strand Hotel Swakopmund, Swakopmund (Wed, 5 April)

Set along Namibia’s spectacularly scenic coast, the seaside town of Swakopmund is known for its wide-open avenues, colonial architecture, and its surrounding otherworldly desert terrain. Founded in 1892 as the main harbor for German South-West Africa, Swakopmund is often described as being more German than Germany. Swakopmund, now a seaside resort town, is the capital of the Skeleton Coast tourism area and has plenty to keep visitors happy. The quirky mix of German and Namibian influences, adventure options, laid-back atmosphere and cool sea breeze make it a very popular Namibian destination. Visitors can look forward to a number of exciting activities, including: quad biking, horseback riding, paragliding, fishing, sightseeing, and fascinating desert tours.

Overnight: Strand Hotel Swakopmund

With its extensive, unique and creatively entertaining Restaurants, Bars, Deli, Lobby-Lounge, sea-facing Facing Terraces, Beach Kiosk and state-of-the art Conference & Banqueting Center, all set on the Mole, a historic and iconic site surrounded by Ocean on three sides, the Strand Hotel Swakopmund is a social epicenter and destination in itself for all visitors to and residents of Swakopmund.

Its architectural inspiration finds its roots deep in Namibian-German history and reflects this in a tasteful contemporary manner. The interiors are residential in nature, and the brief to all designers involved was to create a non-hotel. One as charming and welcoming as the town it is located in. Simply very warm and comfortable, and as they say in German: “gemütlich,” providing a genuine “sense-of-place” atmosphere adding to any Namibian visit.

Arriving at the Strand is a dramatic experience as one passes through its 13-meter-high and 9-meter-wide Ocean View Atrium, which travels right through the hotel, offering sea views at either end. Off this Atrium Lobby is Reception, consisting of three individual desks and an inviting open fireplace, which rounds off the residential feel and warm welcome.

Luxury Suite

Suites offer a sliding door with “sit-on” balcony and sea view. Open-plan lounge, dining room and separate bedroom. Suites have a bathroom with shower, baths, vanities and separate toilet. Luxury Suites accommodate max 2 adults and 2 children up to 10.

As we explore this breath-taking terrain, we will share a lot of information on origin, weather and the special adaptations of its inhabitants. This 3.5 -hour exploration will be rounded off with a short dune drive.

Day 7 - 9Shipwreck Lodge, Skeleton Coast (Fri, 7 April to Sun, 9 April)

Stretching from the Swakop River to southern Angola, Namibia’s Skeleton Coast is known as the ‘Land God Made in Anger’. Thousands of miles of sandy desert dotted with shipwrecks meet with the cold waters of the Atlantic, where ocean fog creeps over the shoreline. Somehow, an amazing array of wildlife and flora manages to survive in this harsh but beautiful environment. Animals living here include seabird colonies, Cape fur seals, zebras, gemsbok, desert-adapted elephants, lions, and many more. Surfing enthusiasts are drawn to the powerful crashing waves, and photographers flock from around the globe to snap photos of the eerie shipwreck graveyards and breathtaking coastline.

Overnight: Shipwreck Lodge

The lodge is located in the famous Skeleton Coast Central Concession between the Hoarusib and Hoanib Rivers in the Skeleton Coast Park, only 50 km north of Möwe Bay. The lodge is situated on the southern bank of the Huarusib River Mouth, nestled between the dunes, with a view of the Atlantic
Ocean, where the cold Benguela current pushes a refreshing breeze over the shipwreck shaped cabins. The size of the concession area is approximately 146,600 hectares, situated in north-western Namibia.

Parking and Pick-up point

Vehicles of self-drive guests are parked under cover at the pickup point situated at Möwe Bay. Fly-In guests will also be picked up at Möwe Bay. You will then be transferred, 45 km north to  Shipwreck Lodge in a closed game drive vehicle. This could take approximately 2 hours and constitute part of your afternoon activity.

  • Möwe Bay GPS co-ordinates: 19°03’52,3” S & 12°35’03,4” E
  • Lodge emergency contact number: +264 (0)81 260 0830.

Pick-up times

  • The Pickup times from Möwe Bay to the Lodge will be at:
    11:00 OR 15:00
  • Departure times from Shipwreck Lodge to Möwe Bay will be at:
    09:00

A quad biking activity is offered to guests at Shipwreck Lodge, among other activities. If you are considering taking part in quad biking, please ensure that your travel insurance covers you for this activity. Please be aware that regulations around quad bike use vary enormously around the world and do not always match those in place in the UK or US. Our recommendation is that children under 16 years do not take part in quad biking activities, either as a driver or a passenger. Children aged 16 and over should only be carried as passengers where the quad bike is designed for this, i.e., it has a separate seat and separate foot pegs. If at any time a quad bike is to be driven on a public road, then a full, valid driving license will be required of the driver. Please ensure you listen to all instructions carefully and are confident in how to operate the quad bike before heading out onto the sand dunes. If at any time you feel uncomfortable with the excursion, please let your guide know.

Day 9 - 11Hoanib Valley Camp, Hoanib River (Sun, 9 April to Tue, 11 April)

Where Kaokoland meets the Skeleton Coast, in western Namibia, the 270-kilometre-long Hoanib River is one of the last water oases in the country, providing a haven for numerous animals. Home to 75% of Namibia’s endemic species, including the largest numbers of desert-adapted, free-roaming elephants, lions, and rhinos in the world, as well as zebra, kudu, and giraffe, this is a truly exceptional and awe-inspiring place. Visitors can enjoy taking a wonderful four-wheel-drive route, going on adventurous hiking trails, running down enormous sand dunes, or climbing massive, strangely shaped rock formations, as well as several guided nature walks.

Overnight: Hoanib Valley Camp

Located in one of the most beautiful areas of Namibia, the camp and its surroundings are truly breathtaking, with many visitors feeling time spent here is a life affirming experience. The north western area, Kaokoland, is identified by its vast open desert wilderness, towering dunes and swathes of rocky mountains. Tucked into the backdrop are six guest tents exuding a modern safari style that reflects their surroundings in the furnishing and design.

Your days are spent exploring this spectacular area, understanding its unique geology, wildlife and culture. Home to one of the last great nomadic tribes, the iconic Himba, as well as the identifiable Herero, there is plenty of opportunity for cultural interaction. The Giraffe Conservation Foundation, with whom this is a joint venture, adds a wealth of specialist knowledge to your morning and afternoon drives, searching for the desert adapted elephant, giraffe, lion, black rhino and mountain zebra. Alternatively, there are few better places to spend restful time contemplating the beauty around you than from the privacy of your veranda before enjoying exceptional hosting and dining.
